Why Everything Went Down: Inside the Cyberattack That Disrupted CondoCafe, Blog and HOA Email

Lakes of Bent Tree residents experienced a series of service disruptions over the past several days, affecting both the CondoCafe resident portal and HOA email communications. Please communicate via the website and blog until we are back online. The interruptions have been traced to a cyberattack impacting 1.5 million third-party systems that support these services. Updates on saervice restoration will be posted here.
Timeline of Events
- May 1: CondoCafe platform became unavailable or intermittently accessible
- May 2-4: Blog down
- May 2–4: HOA email service taken offline to clear virus and install counter protection
What Happened
The vendors that host CondoCafe and LoBT email services were targeted by a type of cyberattack designed to overwhelm systems with excessive traffic - a digital traffic jam—servers become so busy handling fake requests that legitimate users can’t get through.
This type of attack is commonly used to disrupt operations, not to access or steal information.
Impact to Residents
- Temporary inability to log into CondoCafe (now resolved)
- Delayed or undelivered HOA emails (ongoing)
- Blog down (operating via a temporary patch)
Services are all being brought back up and online. email is expected to be down through Sunday.
No immediate action is required. However, as a general best practice:
- The website and blog are up and running
- When the email system is announced to be back up, best resend any emails sent adter April 30
Data Security
There is no indication that resident data, payment information, or personal records were compromised. The nature of the attack was focused on availability, not access.
Association Response
The Association is working with its service providers to:
- Confirm full system recovery and integrity
- Moving to a new "virgin" server
Context
Incidents like this are increasingly common across many industries as attackers target large service platforms. While disruptive, these systems are designed to recover, and protections are continually improved in response.
